Inspiration for my filigree hexagon pieces

Creating filigree jewelry, based on my heritage and tradition, is my passion. I’m on a never-ending quest to find new ways to integrate the old with the new to create timeless pieces.

My hexagon pieces are timeless yet introduce a new angle with mixed metals, dominant geometric shapes and diametric techniques. I’ve drawn inspiration from my past, Kabbalistic sources and more when creating these filigree designs.

My grandfather’s hexagon button

My grandfather made buttons in the traditional Yemenite Filigree style. My goal was to update this classic piece and give it a fine, contemporary touch: to preserve the filigree and meaning but simplify and update the entire look.

My Grandfather's Button:

In many cultures, the hexagon symbolizes the coming together of opposing forces. This idea is as relevant as ever today.

Discovery of Kabbalah in the Original Design

Being raised in a culture with so much symbolism, I felt the need to research the significance behind this piece. This led me to discover beautiful meaning that further inspired me.

First, I found Metatron's Cube, whose shape visually resembled my grandfather’s button:

In Jewish Rabbinical literature, Metatron was the highest of angels. The hexagon shape and outer circles represent the upper six Sefirot of the Tree of Life:

In Kabbalah, the Sefirot are ten modes through which G‑d manifests. These are the upper six attributes:

    • Keter- crown
    • Chochmah - wisdom
    • Binah - understanding
    • Chessed - kindness/mercy
    • Gevurah - strength
    • Tiferet - beauty

Notice the hexagon created by the upper 6 attributes

I created my hexagon necklaces after being inspired artistically and spiritually. They tell a story of our relationship with time and history and incorporate the beautiful spiritual concept of our upper attributes.

Representing the future, the 18k gold frame was made using 3-D printing technology. As for the past, I meticulously hand filled the frame using the ancient filigree technique:

I love the play in the juxtaposition of very old with very new. Mimicking the placement of the circles in my grandfather's piece, the six diamonds in the corners represent the upper Sefirot and add a gorgeous sparkle. The piece has a fine touch and is of the highest quality, while serving as a versatile spiritual reminder.

When minimal, fine aesthetic holds power and inspiration

Keter, the crown, which is symbolized by the top diamond, refers to things that are above the mind's abilities of comprehension. This is the uppermost attribute: What is hidden, what is unknown.

I come from a lineage of filigree jewelers and studied the craft with two of my grandfather’s brothers. This technique is thousands of years old and has been used in many ancient artifacts, swords, vessels and ceremonial pieces. Archaeological finds in ancient Mesopotamia indicate that filigree was incorporated into jewelry as early as 3,000 BC.

During this unique and challenging period, this concept especially resonates with me.  In order to protect ourselves spiritually, we need to feel comfortable with the unknown. Today, we feel that we could use a talisman, a protective piece of jewelry that connects us to our upper attributes and reminds us to stay connected to our source of power and goodness. For me, this is reflected in my hexagon pieces.

    Earrings, Necklace and Surprise Closure

A small version of this necklace and matching earrings are also available. The necklace is adjustable from 15” to 18” so can be presented as a surprise gift that fits everyone. It’s the perfect weight, allowing it to  fall nicely, and can be dressed up or down.

The adjustable closure of the piece features a tiny hamsa, offering “protection from behind”.

Wishing us all to be inspired, to have patience for opposing forces and conduct ourselves from our upper attributes: our crown, wisdom, understanding, kindness/mercy, strength and beauty.
